Here is a brief description of these events:
La Guelaguetza
The Guelaguetza, or Los lunes del cerro (Mondays on the Hill) is an annual indigenous cultural event in Mexico that takes place in the city of Oaxaca, capital of the state of Oaxaca, as well as in nearby villages. The celebration centers on traditional dancing in costume in groups, often gender-separated groups, as is traditional, and includes parades complete with indigenous walking bands, native food, and statewide artisanal crafts such as prehispanic-style textiles. Each costume (traje) and dance usually has a local indigenous historical and cultural meaning. Although the celebration is now an important tourist attraction, it also retains deep cultural importance for the peoples of the state and is important for the continuing survival of these cultures.
Dia de los Muertos
Day of the Dead, or Dia de los Muertos, is an ancestral celebration that long pre-dates the Spanish Conquest. Ancient cultures, like the Zapotec, Toltec, and Aztec, actually worshiped death, viewing it not as an ending, but the beginning of a 9-stage journey through the underworld to ultimate peace. Oaxaca is considered an epicentre for Day of the Dead festivities, with parades and live music taking place across the city.
If that wasn't enough, Oaxaca is a culinary delight. You, friends, and family will Indulge in Oaxaca's renowned food, such as it's iconic "mole," a complex sauce that tantalizes the taste buds with a harmonious blend of chiles, chocolate, and spices. Or, a tlayuda, a "giant" crispy tortilla topped with cheese and various garnishes. For those brave souls, Oaxaca offers pre-hispanic foods such as "chapulines" grasshoppers coated with spices. Try the "pulque" a prehispanic fermented alcohol beverage blended with fruit. If Mexican food is not your favorite, it might be after visiting Oaxaca.
